Reddit vs Quora vs YouTube for AI Citations: Where Should Your Brand Show Up in 2026?

Jan Kobylarz, Founder, ReddBounty 8 min readLast updated:

The short answer

Across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Reddit earns the largest share of social-platform citations, around half in early 2026 data, with YouTube second and growing fastest, and Quora declining. Reddit also appears in about 84% of Google's Discussions and forums results versus 32% for Quora. Reddit is the best first investment for most brands, YouTube is the strongest second channel, especially for Google's AI features, and Quora is now a low-priority extra.

Key takeaways

  • In a study of about 350,000 social-platform citations across five AI systems (January to February 2026), Reddit took over half, YouTube about a fifth and Quora under a tenth.
  • YouTube was the fastest-growing source, up about 55% month over month, and is especially strong in Google's AI features.
  • Quora was the only major platform whose AI citations declined, and Facebook overtook it in Google's Discussions and forums feature in January 2026.
  • Different AI engines lean on different sources, and shares move month to month. Do not bet on one platform.
  • Order of investment for most brands: Reddit first, YouTube second, Quora and others only if your buyers are there.

Why this question matters

AI assistants rarely cite your website alone. When someone asks "what's the best CRM for a small agency?", the answer leans on what other people say: discussions, reviews and videos. So the question for marketers in 2026 is not just "how do I rank?" but "where do I need to be present so AI finds people talking about me?"

Three platforms come up again and again: Reddit, YouTube and Quora. Here is what the data says about each.

What the 2026 data shows

Share of AI citations among social platforms

Wellows analyzed about 350,000 citations to social platforms across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in January and February 2026 (Wellows). Using the study's monthly totals:

Share of social-platform AI citations Jan 2026 Feb 2026 Reddit 53.6% YouTube 21.4% LinkedIn 12.7% Quora 6.4% Facebook 2.9% Month over month YouTube citations+55% Reddit citations+37% Quora citations-21% Jan to Feb 2026, absolute counts Source: Wellows, ~350,000 social citations across 5 AI systems. Shares calculated from stated totals.
Figure 1. Reddit takes the largest share of social-platform citations. YouTube grew fastest; Quora was the only major platform to decline.

Google's Discussions and forums results

Ahrefs looked at 145 million US Google results and found the Discussions and forums feature on 11.7% of them. Reddit appeared in 83.9% of those features, Facebook in 38.3% and Quora in 32%. Facebook overtook Quora in January 2026 (Ahrefs).

Each engine has favorites

Platform shares shift by engine and over time:

  • ChatGPT has relied heavily on Reddit and Wikipedia, but its Reddit citations swung from close to 60% of responses to around 10% within weeks in 2025 (Semrush).
  • Google AI Mode cited LinkedIn, YouTube and Reddit as its top domains in Semrush's late-2025 data, while Perplexity cited Reddit most (Semrush).
  • Google AI Overviews lean heavily on YouTube. An analysis of 36 million AI Overviews by Surfer, reported by Radiant Elephant, put YouTube at about 23% of citations, and Ahrefs data showed YouTube's share growing 34% in six months (Radiant Elephant).
  • In January and February 2026, Semrush found Reddit was the top cited domain across ChatGPT search, AI Mode and Perplexity (EMARKETER).

The honest summary: studies use different prompts, engines and time windows, so exact percentages disagree. The ranking is consistent, though. Reddit leads, YouTube is a strong and rising second, Quora is fading.

Platform by platform

Reddit: the discussion layer AI trusts

Why it gets cited: a massive archive of first-hand answers to specific questions, strong Google rankings, data partnerships with Google and OpenAI, and, since May 2026, Google quoting forum and Reddit "perspectives" directly in AI Overviews and AI Mode (Engadget).

Best for: "best X for Y", comparisons, alternatives, honest reviews and troubleshooting.

Hard part: strict community rules, filters on new accounts and a culture that punishes obvious marketing. You earn mentions; you cannot just publish them. See Reddit's new-account rules.

YouTube: the explainer layer, especially for Google

Why it gets cited: Google owns it, transcripts make videos readable to AI, and demos and reviews answer "how" and "which" questions well.

Best for: product demos, setup tutorials, side-by-side comparisons and "I tried X for 30 days" style reviews.

Hard part: production time and cost. A good video takes far longer than a good comment, and new channels grow slowly. Creator reviews help, but disclose any sponsorship.

Quora: still there, but fading

Why it still gets cited sometimes: a large archive of older Q&A that ranks for long-tail questions.

Best for: answering a few evergreen, high-traffic questions in your niche with an expert answer.

Hard part: shrinking share in both AI citations and Google's forum results. Low effort to post, but low and declining return.

Honorable mention: LinkedIn

For B2B brands, LinkedIn was the third-largest social source in the Wellows data and a top domain in Google AI Mode in Semrush's study. Thoughtful posts and articles from founders and experts can get cited for professional and B2B questions.

Where to invest first

A sensible order of investment 1 Reddit Highest citation share. Buyers already asking. Low cost per piece. 2 YouTube Fastest growing. Key for Google's AI. Demos and reviews. 3 LinkedIn For B2B brands. Founder and expert posts get cited. 4 Quora Optional. Low effort, but declining return. Adjust for your audience: a design tool may need YouTube sooner, a niche B2B service may need LinkedIn first.
Figure 2. For most brands, Reddit gives the best citation return per hour invested.

A practical 90-day plan:

  1. Month 1: Reddit. Benchmark AI answers for your top 15 buyer prompts, find the Reddit threads that rank and get cited, and start contributing honestly. Our guide to finding threads that rank on Google shows how.
  2. Month 2: YouTube. Publish two or three videos that answer your most common buyer questions: a demo, a comparison and a setup guide. Clear titles and accurate transcripts matter.
  3. Month 3: Fill gaps. B2B? Add founder posts on LinkedIn. Lots of old Quora questions ranking in your niche? Answer the top five. Then re-run your AI benchmark and compare.

How ReddBounty helps with the Reddit layer

Reddit is the biggest slice and the hardest to do well, because you cannot just publish. ReddBounty is built for it:

  • See where you stand. The free AI visibility checker shows whether AI assistants mention you for your buyer prompts and which sources they cite.
  • Find the threads that matter. Monitoring surfaces relevant threads, including those ranking on Google.
  • Real mentions from real people. Campaigns connect you with real Creators with established Reddit accounts who mention your brand in relevant threads, in their own words, under our disclosure policy.
  • Rules first. Scout AI checks every Task against the subreddit's rules and scores removal risk before anything goes live.
  • Pay only for what is live. Campaign balance is only used when a post is live and approved, with proof. If a post is removed early, the Task is relisted or refunded.

Frequently asked questions

Which platform is cited most by AI search engines?

Among social and community platforms, Reddit is cited most often across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in early 2026 data, followed by YouTube, LinkedIn and Quora. Across all domains, results vary by engine: ChatGPT also leans heavily on Wikipedia, and Google AI Mode often cites LinkedIn and YouTube.

Is Quora still worth it for AI visibility?

Quora still appears in Google results and some AI answers, but its share of AI citations fell in early 2026 and Facebook overtook it in Google's Discussions and forums feature. Answering a handful of high-traffic questions in your niche is fine, but it should not be your main channel.

Does YouTube help with Google AI Overviews?

Yes. Multiple 2026 analyses found YouTube among the most-cited domains in Google AI Overviews, and its citation share grew quickly through 2026. Clear, well-titled videos with good transcripts, demos and comparisons are the formats most likely to be cited.

Why do AI engines cite Reddit so much?

Reddit has a huge archive of first-hand, specific answers to real questions, it ranks well in Google, Google quotes forum discussions directly in AI Overviews, and both Google and OpenAI have content partnerships with Reddit.

Should I do Reddit, YouTube or Quora first?

Most brands should start with Reddit because it has the highest citation share and the buyers are already asking questions there. Add YouTube when you can produce useful demos or comparisons. Treat Quora as optional.

How AI Assistants Choose Which Brands to Recommend: The 6 Signals That Matter (2026)

AI assistants recommend brands they already associate with a category and can confirm in sources they retrieve. Research from 2025 and 2026 points to six signals: category association, third-party mentions across the web, retrievability in search, a clear and consistent brand description, reputation in reviews and discussions, and fit with the user's constraints. Off-site mentions matter most: in Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, three times more than backlinks at 0.218.

How to Get Your Products Recommended in ChatGPT Shopping (2026 Guide)

ChatGPT shows products in carousels and in buyer's guides from its shopping research feature. OpenAI says product results are selected independently, are not ads and are ranked on relevance to the request using structured product data like price and description, reviews from public websites, and merchant factors like availability, price and quality. Shopify stores are included through Shopify Catalog; other merchants can apply for a direct product feed. To get recommended, make your product data complete and accurate, earn real reviews and discussion on the sites ChatGPT reads, and test buyer prompts monthly.

Reddit Answers Explained: How Reddit's AI Search Works and How Brands Show Up in It (2026)

Reddit Answers is Reddit's AI-powered search. You ask a question in plain language and it returns a summary of what Redditors have said, with links to the source threads and follow-up questions. Launched in December 2024, it has been merged into Reddit's main search, which reached over 80 million weekly searchers in Q4 2025. For brands, it means the threads where people discuss your category now feed an AI answer engine inside Reddit itself, on top of Google and ChatGPT.
