How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT: The Reddit Playbook (2026)

Jan Kobylarz, Founder, ReddBounty 11 min readLast updated:

The short answer

ChatGPT recommends brands it already associates with a category and can back up with sources it trusts. Reddit matters on both counts: its discussions feed AI training and live search, and Reddit has repeatedly ranked among the most-cited domains in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. To get recommended, benchmark the prompts your buyers use, find the threads and pages AI cites, earn honest mentions there, make your brand easy to describe, and measure monthly.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT has about 900 million weekly users (February 2026), and many of them ask it what to buy, use or hire.
  • A 2026 analysis found brands that ChatGPT writes into its own search query appear in the final answer far more often (68.9%) than brands whose pages are merely fetched (2.1%). Being known in your category comes first.
  • Brands mentioned on more of the pages AI cites tend to be recommended more strongly. Reddit threads, review sites and third-party blogs are those pages.
  • AI citation sources are volatile: Reddit's share of ChatGPT responses swung from about 60% to about 10% within weeks in 2025. Spread your presence across several trusted sources.
  • Fake reviews, sockpuppet accounts and vote manipulation break Reddit's rules and get removed. Honest, disclosed, useful mentions are what last.

Why this matters now

ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026 (TechCrunch). A growing share of them ask it the questions that used to go to Google: "best CRM for a five-person agency", "alternatives to Notion", "is X worth it".

When ChatGPT answers those questions, it usually names a handful of brands. If you are not one of them, you are invisible at the exact moment someone is deciding. And unlike a Google results page, there is no page two.

How ChatGPT actually picks brands

Think of it as two filters.

Filter 1: Who it already thinks of. When ChatGPT searches the web, it writes its own search queries. In a 2026 analysis published by Search Engine Journal, 21 of 27 first queries contained a brand name the user never typed. Brands that ChatGPT wrote into its query appeared in the final answer 68.9% of the time. Brands whose pages were fetched but never named in the query appeared just 2.1% of the time, roughly a 33x gap (Search Engine Journal). The study was small and single-account, so treat it as directional, but the lesson is clear: being known in your category comes before being cited.

Filter 2: What the sources say. Among the pages ChatGPT fetches, it cites those that are relevant and answer the question well. Surfer analyzed 922 prompts across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity and found that brands mentioned on a larger share of cited pages tend to be recommended more strongly (Spearman correlation 0.41), with ChatGPT showing the strongest link (Surfer).

Where Reddit fits in

Reddit sits on both sides of that picture.

  • What AI learns from. OpenAI announced a partnership with Reddit in May 2024 that gives it access to Reddit content through Reddit's Data API (OpenAI). On its Q2 2026 earnings call, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said Reddit data is used for training, post-training, grounding and as a search index, and that there are more buyers than just Google and OpenAI (Q2 2026 call transcript).
  • What AI cites. Semrush data covering about 325,000 prompts in January and February 2026 found Reddit was the top cited domain across ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity (EMARKETER).

There is an important caveat. Citation sources are volatile. In an earlier Semrush study, Reddit appeared in close to 60% of ChatGPT responses in early August 2025, then fell to around 10% by mid-September, while remaining one of ChatGPT's two most-cited domains alongside Wikipedia (Semrush). Other trackers using different prompt sets show different top domains entirely. The takeaway is not "only do Reddit". It is "be present in the places real people discuss your category, Reddit first among them".

Step 1: Write down the prompts your buyers actually use

List 15 to 20 prompts in plain buyer language. Mix these types:

  • "Best [category] for [use case or audience]"
  • "[Competitor] alternatives" and "[competitor] vs [competitor]"
  • "Is [your brand] worth it?" and "[your brand] reviews"
  • Problem-first prompts: "How do I [job your product does] without [pain]?"

Use the words customers use in sales calls and support tickets, not your marketing copy.

Step 2: Benchmark where you stand

Run every prompt in ChatGPT with search on, ideally from a fresh session. For each one, record: are you named, in what position, how are you described, which competitors appear, and which sources are cited. Repeat in Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode, since each leans on different sources.

If you are comfortable with browser developer tools, the Search Engine Journal method is worth trying: inspect the network response and look at the search queries ChatGPT wrote. If your brand never appears in those queries, your problem is Filter 1 (awareness), and tweaking your own web pages will not fix it on its own.

Step 3: Map the sources that shape the answer

Collect every URL cited across your prompts and group them: Reddit threads, review sites, listicles and blogs, YouTube, competitor pages. Then search Google for your top prompts with "reddit" added ("best invoicing app reddit") to find the threads that also rank on Google. Those threads do double duty: they bring readers from Google and they get pulled into AI answers. Our guide to why Reddit ranks on Google explains the pattern.

Step 4: Make your brand easy to describe

AI can only recommend what it can summarize. Make sure:

  • Your homepage says in one sentence what you are, who it is for and what makes it different.
  • The same one-line description appears on your social profiles, directory listings and review profiles.
  • You have honest comparison and pricing pages, so AI does not have to guess.
  • Your key pages have direct answers under clear headings and an FAQ. See how to get cited in AI answers.

Step 5: Earn honest mentions in the threads that matter

This is where most brands either win or get banned. The right way:

  • Join threads where your category is genuinely being discussed, including older threads that still rank and are still open for comments.
  • Answer the question first. Mention your product only where it actually fits, alongside other options, with real trade-offs.
  • Disclose any affiliation. "I work on X" is honest and is what moderators expect.
  • Use accounts with real history, and follow each subreddit's rules. Reddit's new AI moderation layer checks posts against the intent of those rules, as we explained in Reddit Rules Hub explained.
  • Encourage real customers to share real experiences where they already hang out. Never script them.

Step 6: Create things people want to discuss

Mentions come more easily when you give people something worth mentioning: an original data point, a free tool, a template, a candid post-mortem or an AMA. These get shared in threads on their own, and they give AI something specific to cite.

Step 7: Spread out, then measure monthly

Do not put all your eggs in one domain. Alongside Reddit, earn mentions in third-party blogs and listicles (the content type with the strongest link to recommendations in Surfer's study), on review sites and on YouTube. Re-run your prompt set every month and track: share of prompts where you are named, average position, how you are described and which sources cite you.

Figure 3. Treat AI visibility like SEO: a loop, not a one-off project.

What not to do

Shortcuts here backfire, and on Reddit they backfire publicly.

  • Fake accounts and fake reviews. Reddit prohibits spam, vote manipulation and deceptive accounts, and moderators are good at spotting coordinated posting. Getting caught can get threads deleted and your brand mocked in the very communities AI reads.
  • Undisclosed promotion. Beyond Reddit's rules, many countries require paid endorsements to be disclosed. Hidden pitches are also exactly what intent-based moderation is designed to catch.
  • Copy-paste comments. The same comment across ten threads looks like spam to people, moderators and AI alike.
  • Optimizing only your own website. If you never appear in ChatGPT's own search queries, rewriting your landing page will not fix that. The fix is being discussed elsewhere.

Your options for getting it done

Do it yourself. Cheapest in cash, most expensive in time. Works well if a founder or team member enjoys Reddit and can show up daily for months. Pair it with free tools: F5Bot for alerts and Reddit Pro for trends.

PR and listicle outreach. Getting into "best X" articles on respected blogs is valuable for AI visibility. It is slow and often pay-to-play, and not all lists are trusted.

Review sites. Asking happy customers for reviews on the platforms your buyers check is low-risk and helps both Google and AI.

A Reddit agency. Experienced hands, monthly retainers, and you depend on the agency's accounts and judgment. We compared models in agency vs pay-per-result.

AI visibility and monitoring tools. Useful for tracking, but they do not create mentions for you. See Reddit marketing tools compared.

How ReddBounty helps

ReddBounty is built for steps 2, 3 and 5 of this playbook.

  • Benchmark for free. Our AI visibility checker runs buyer-style prompts in AI assistants and shows whether you are named, how you are described and which competitors and sources appear instead.
  • Find the threads that matter. We surface Reddit threads in your category, including the ones ranking on Google, with an estimate of how much attention they get.
  • Get honest mentions from real people. With a Campaign, real Creators with established Reddit accounts post helpful replies about your brand in those threads, in their own words and under our disclosure policy.
  • Stay within the rules. Scout AI checks every Task against the subreddit's rules before it goes live and scores its removal risk. Communities that do not allow promotion are skipped.
  • Pay only for what is live. Your Campaign balance is only used when a post is live and approved, with a live link and screenshot as proof. If a post is removed early, the Task is relisted or refunded.
  • Track the change. Monitoring shows new mentions of you and your competitors, and you can re-run the AI check monthly to see whether answers are moving.

The bottom line

You cannot buy your way into ChatGPT's recommendations, but you can earn your way in. Be easy to describe, be present where real people discuss your category, be honest about who you are, and measure every month. Reddit is the best place to start because it feeds both what AI knows and what it cites. It should not be the only place you show up.

Frequently asked questions

How does ChatGPT decide which brands to recommend?

Two things work together. First, what the model already knows: brands it has seen discussed often in a category during training are more likely to be written into its search queries. Second, what it finds when it searches: pages that rank, are relevant and clearly answer the question get cited, and brands mentioned across many of those pages get recommended more strongly.

Does ChatGPT use Reddit?

Yes. OpenAI announced a partnership with Reddit in May 2024 that gives it access to Reddit content through Reddit's Data API, and Reddit says its data is used for training, grounding and search. Semrush has repeatedly found Reddit among the most-cited domains in ChatGPT search, although the share moves a lot from month to month.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

There is no way to buy a place in ChatGPT's organic recommendations. What you can do is improve the signals it relies on: being clearly described, being discussed in trusted communities and being mentioned on the pages it cites.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

When ChatGPT searches the web, new pages and threads can influence answers within days or weeks once they are indexed. What the model knows from training changes only when new model versions are released, which takes months. Plan for both: quick wins from live sources and slower brand-building.

How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?

Write 15 to 20 prompts your buyers would ask, such as 'best [category] for [use case]' or 'alternatives to [competitor]', run them with search on, and record whether you are named, where you appear and which sources are cited. Repeat monthly. ReddBounty's free AI visibility checker automates a version of this.

Is posting about my product on Reddit allowed?

It depends on the subreddit. Many ban self-promotion, some allow it in specific threads, and most expect you to disclose any affiliation. Read the rules first, lead with help, and skip communities that do not allow promotion.

How AI Assistants Choose Which Brands to Recommend: The 6 Signals That Matter (2026)

AI assistants recommend brands they already associate with a category and can confirm in sources they retrieve. Research from 2025 and 2026 points to six signals: category association, third-party mentions across the web, retrievability in search, a clear and consistent brand description, reputation in reviews and discussions, and fit with the user's constraints. Off-site mentions matter most: in Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, three times more than backlinks at 0.218.

How to Get Your Products Recommended in ChatGPT Shopping (2026 Guide)

ChatGPT shows products in carousels and in buyer's guides from its shopping research feature. OpenAI says product results are selected independently, are not ads and are ranked on relevance to the request using structured product data like price and description, reviews from public websites, and merchant factors like availability, price and quality. Shopify stores are included through Shopify Catalog; other merchants can apply for a direct product feed. To get recommended, make your product data complete and accurate, earn real reviews and discussion on the sites ChatGPT reads, and test buyer prompts monthly.

Reddit vs Quora vs YouTube for AI Citations: Where Should Your Brand Show Up in 2026?

Across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Reddit earns the largest share of social-platform citations, around half in early 2026 data, with YouTube second and growing fastest, and Quora declining. Reddit also appears in about 84% of Google's Discussions and forums results versus 32% for Quora. Reddit is the best first investment for most brands, YouTube is the strongest second channel, especially for Google's AI features, and Quora is now a low-priority extra.
