Reddit's New-Account Rules in 2026: Karma, Account Age and Why Your Posts Get Filtered

Jan Kobylarz, Founder, ReddBounty 10 min readLast updated:

The short answer

Most posts from new Reddit accounts are not removed by a person. They are held by automatic gates: minimum karma and account-age rules that moderators set in AutoMod, Reddit's Contributor Quality Score, sitewide spam filters and, increasingly, Rules Hub. The thresholds are usually hidden. In August 2026 Reddit said better AI abuse prevention could eventually let communities rely less on karma and account age, but there is no date, so for now new accounts still need to build real history before posting in large communities.

Key takeaways

  • Karma and account-age minimums are set by each subreddit's moderators, usually in AutoMod, and are rarely published.
  • Reddit's Contributor Quality Score (CQS) rates accounts from Lowest to Highest using signals like past actions on the account and whether it is secured. Many communities filter low-CQS posts.
  • In August 2026 Reddit said new AI tools could eventually reduce reliance on karma and account-age gates. It gave no date, and it did not say karma is going away.
  • A filtered post often looks normal to you but is invisible to everyone else. Check from a logged-out browser.
  • The fix is real history: a verified email, helpful comments in welcoming communities, no links at first and a steady, human pace.

Why new accounts get filtered

Reddit has always had a spam problem, and new accounts are where most spam comes from. So over the years, communities stacked up automatic defenses. Each one makes sense on its own. Together, they create what Reddit itself now calls "invisible barriers like account age and karma thresholds" (TechCrunch).

Even Reddit's CEO admits the system is rough on newcomers. On the Q2 2026 earnings call, Steve Huffman said new users often have posts removed because their accounts are not old enough, and called that long-standing strategy one that "has not aged well" (Q2 2026 call).

The layers that decide whether your post is seen

What a new account's post has to get through 1. Reddit's sitewide spam filters Links, patterns, known spam 2. Subreddit AutoMod rules Karma, account age, keywords 3. Contributor Quality Score Lowest to Highest tiers 4. Rules Hub (AI) Intent of each rule 5. Moderators and reports Human review
Figure 1. Not every subreddit uses every layer, and each community configures its own. New accounts are most likely to be stopped at layers 1 to 3.

1. Sitewide spam filters

Reddit runs its own filters across the whole site. They look for spam patterns: the same link posted in many places, very fast posting, links to domains associated with spam, and similar signals. A post caught here can be removed before any moderator sees it.

2. Subreddit karma and account-age rules

Moderators can set AutoMod rules that hold or remove posts from accounts below a certain karma or age. These numbers vary widely and are usually kept private, because publishing them helps spammers aim just above the line. Large, popular communities tend to set the highest bars, and some require karma earned in that community, not just overall.

3. Contributor Quality Score (CQS)

Since September 2023, every mod team can use Reddit's Contributor Quality Score in AutoMod. CQS places each account in one of five tiers: Lowest, Low, Moderate, High and Highest. Reddit does not publish the formula, but has said it considers things like past actions taken on an account, network and location signals, and whether the account is secured, for example with a verified email. Reddit reported that in pilots, CQS filters cut moderator reversals of AutoMod actions and daily removals compared with plain karma and age gates (Postpone). You cannot see your own score.

4. Rules Hub

Rules Hub is Reddit's newer, LLM-based moderation layer. It reads posts against what each rule means and applies the action moderators choose: send to queue, filter or remove. It was tested in 700+ communities, is available to all new subreddits, and is planned for wider availability later in 2026. We covered it in depth in Reddit Rules Hub explained.

5. Moderators and reports

Finally, humans. Moderators review queues, act on reports and make judgment calls. A new account posting a promotion is the classic case that gets reported.

Figure 2. Reddit is moving from blunt thresholds toward identity and AI-based signals, but the old gates still apply today.

On August 5, 2026, Reddit announced a package of moderation changes. The part that matters most for new accounts: Reddit says its new built-in abuse-prevention systems could eventually let communities stop relying on karma and account-age requirements to decide who can post. In Reddit's words, "This will make it easier for genuine new users to participate and easier for mods to welcome them with confidence" (TechCrunch).

Read the fine print, though:

  • No date. Reddit said it "could eventually" happen.
  • Karma is not going away. Reddit only suggested its importance could shrink (eGamers).
  • Moderators still decide. Subreddits can keep their thresholds as long as they want.
  • New helper tools. Reddit also expanded a tool that shows community rules while you write a post or comment, and a flair helper. Use them. They exist to stop honest mistakes.

At the same time, Reddit has been adding identity signals: verified profiles for brands and individuals in Q4 2025, with bot verification and labeling planned next (Reddit Q4 2025 letter), and a grey-checkmark verified profile beta for eligible Reddit Pro businesses from July 2026 (Reddit Help).

What this means in practice: the direction is good news for genuine newcomers. But in October 2026, a brand-new account posting in a large community will still very often be filtered.

How to tell if your post was filtered

A filtered post usually looks completely normal to you. Here is how to check:

  1. Open the post in a logged-out or private browser window. If it is missing or shows as removed, it is filtered.
  2. Look at the subreddit's "new" feed while logged out. If your post is not there, nobody else sees it either.
  3. Check your inbox and modmail for an automatic message. Many AutoMod rules send one with the reason.
  4. If nothing you post anywhere is visible, your account may be restricted site-wide. Our guide to Reddit shadowbans explains how to check and what to do.

If you think a filter caught you by mistake, send one polite modmail to that community. Do not repost the same thing repeatedly; that looks like spam and makes things worse.

A realistic 30-day plan for a new account

Your first 30 days on Reddit WEEK 1 Set up • Verify your email • Add avatar and bio • Join 10 communities • A few friendly comments a day WEEK 2 Be useful • Answer questions you know well • No links yet • Steady, human pace WEEK 3 First posts • Text posts in mid- size communities • Use the rules helper • Keep commenting WEEK 4+ Grow • Larger communities • Product mentions only where allowed, always disclosed
Figure 3. A guide, not a guarantee. Thresholds differ by community, and no schedule guarantees approval.

A few principles behind the plan:

  • Comment more than you post. Comments in welcoming communities build karma and history with less risk.
  • Go where newcomers are welcome. Smaller, friendly communities in your interests are easier than giant default-style ones.
  • No links at first. Links from new accounts are a classic spam signal.
  • Keep a human rhythm. Bursts of activity, copy-paste comments and posting the same thing in many places all look automated.
  • Never delete and repost to dodge a filter, and never use a second account to get around a removal or ban. Ban evasion is one of the fastest ways to lose an account.
  • Do not buy accounts or karma. It goes against Reddit's rules, and a sudden change in behavior is easy to spot. For more, see how to get Reddit karma without getting banned.

What this means for brands

Brand-new brand accounts face the same gates, plus extra suspicion because they exist to promote. Practically:

  • Use a Reddit Pro business profile for official posts, updates and AMAs, and apply for the verified profile beta if you are eligible.
  • Let real people lead in threads. Founders and employees with genuine, established accounts can join discussions, with their affiliation disclosed.
  • Do not create "customer" accounts. Sockpuppets are against Reddit's rules and are a reputational disaster when exposed.
  • Expect a ramp-up. Plan Reddit as a 3 to 6 month channel, not a launch-week hack.

Your options

  • Build your own presence. Free and authentic, but slow. Expect a month before you can post freely in larger communities.
  • Reddit Ads. Promoted posts skip karma and age gates entirely, since they are paid placements. They are labeled and stop when the budget stops. See Reddit Ads vs organic posts.
  • Work with people who already have history. An agency or a platform of real Redditors can participate now while you build your own presence.

How ReddBounty helps

ReddBounty connects Brands with real Creators who already have established Reddit accounts and history in the communities that matter, so you do not have to wait months or take shortcuts.

  • Real accounts, real people. Creators post from their own accounts, in their own words, under our disclosure policy. No bots, no bought accounts.
  • Requirements checked first. Scout AI reviews each subreddit's rules and known posting requirements before a Task goes live and scores its removal risk, so Tasks go to communities where they can actually stay up.
  • Pay only for what is live. Your Campaign balance is only used when a post is live and approved, with a link and screenshot as proof. If a post is removed early, the Task is relisted or refunded.
  • Keep building your own account too. Monitoring and Scout AI reply drafts help your team find good threads and reply from your own accounts as they grow.

Frequently asked questions

How much karma do I need to post on Reddit?

There is no single sitewide number. Each subreddit's moderators can set their own minimum karma and account age, the thresholds vary widely, and most communities do not publish the exact numbers so spammers cannot aim just above them. Large, popular communities tend to be stricter.

Why was my post removed immediately?

An instant removal usually means an automatic filter: the subreddit's AutoMod rules (karma, account age, links, keywords), a Contributor Quality Score filter, Reddit's sitewide spam filter or a Rules Hub rule. Read the subreddit rules, check any message from the moderators and, if you believe it was a mistake, send a polite modmail.

Is Reddit getting rid of karma requirements?

Not yet. On August 5, 2026 Reddit said its new abuse-prevention systems could eventually let communities stop relying on karma and account-age requirements. It did not give a date, and subreddits can still use those thresholds today.

What is Reddit's Contributor Quality Score?

CQS is a rating Reddit assigns to accounts, in five tiers from Lowest to Highest, that moderators can use in AutoMod since September 2023. Reddit has said it considers things like past actions taken on an account, network and location signals, and whether the account is secured, for example with a verified email. Users cannot see their own score.

How long should a new Reddit account wait before posting?

Plan on two to four weeks of normal, helpful commenting before posting in large communities, and longer before mentioning any product. Smaller, welcoming communities often accept posts sooner.

Can I buy an aged Reddit account?

Buying or selling accounts goes against Reddit's User Agreement and is a common route to suspension. Accounts with a sudden change in behavior are also easy for moderators and Reddit's systems to spot.

Reddit Marketing for Agencies: How to Add Reddit and AI Visibility to Your Services in 2026

Clients are asking agencies for Reddit because it is one of the most-cited sources in AI answers and ranks on Google for buying searches. A sound agency offer has five layers: an audit of Reddit and AI visibility, ongoing monitoring, disclosed participation in relevant threads, amplification through AMAs and Reddit Ads, and monthly reporting. Typical B2B retainers run about $3,000 to $12,500 a month. The biggest risk is compliance: under the FTC's Endorsement Guides, agencies can be liable for facilitating misleading endorsements, so disclosure and real accounts are non-negotiable.

Removed, Filtered or Shadowbanned? A Flowchart to Diagnose Any Missing Reddit Post (2026)

A missing Reddit post usually falls into one of four buckets: removed by a subreddit's moderators or their automation (AutoMod, Contributor Quality Score, Rules Hub), caught by Reddit's sitewide spam filters, restricted at the account level (shadowban or suspension), or simply buried. The fastest diagnosis is to check the post logged out, check your inbox and post insights, and test whether the problem happens in one subreddit or everywhere. Each bucket has a different fix, from a polite modmail to a formal appeal.

Reddit Marketing for Local Businesses: How to Get Recommended in Your City's Subreddit (2026)

When locals need a dentist, a mechanic or a good brunch spot, many ask their city's subreddit, and those threads often rank on Google for 'best X in [city]' and get quoted in AI answers. Most city subreddits ban self-promotion outside designated threads, so local businesses win on Reddit by being genuinely helpful locals, responding well when mentioned, using the community's promo threads, encouraging real customers to share honest experiences, and using Reddit Ads' location targeting for openings and events.
