How AI Assistants Choose Which Brands to Recommend: The 6 Signals That Matter (2026)
The short answer
AI assistants recommend brands they already associate with a category and can confirm in sources they retrieve. Research from 2025 and 2026 points to six signals: category association, third-party mentions across the web, retrievability in search, a clear and consistent brand description, reputation in reviews and discussions, and fit with the user's constraints. Off-site mentions matter most: in Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, three times more than backlinks at 0.218.
Key takeaways
- Off-site signals dominate. Branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI Overview brand visibility (0.664) in Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study. Backlinks were far weaker (0.218).
- Being known comes first: brands ChatGPT writes into its own search queries are far more likely to be recommended than brands it merely finds.
- Mentions on the pages AI cites matter: brands appearing on more cited pages are recommended more strongly.
- Reputation is summarized, not just counted. Reviews and discussions on public websites shape how you are described.
- Every engine has its own source preferences. Measure across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features, not just one.
Why this question is worth getting right
When someone asks an AI assistant "what's the best accounting software for a small agency?", they usually get three to five names. There is no page two. Being one of those names is the new page-one ranking, and what earns it is not the same as classic SEO.
The good news: enough research has now been published to see the pattern clearly. The less good news: most of it points to signals you cannot fully control from your own site.
What the research says
Mentions beat links
Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and correlated dozens of factors with how often each brand appeared in Google's AI Overviews (Ahrefs).
The gap at the top is striking. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions, versus 14 for the next quartile down, and close to zero below that.
Being known comes before being found
A 2026 analysis published by Search Engine Journal looked at the search queries ChatGPT writes for itself. In 21 of 27 first queries, ChatGPT added a brand name the user had not typed. Brands it named in its own query appeared in the final answer 68.9% of the time, while brands whose pages it merely fetched appeared 2.1% of the time (Search Engine Journal). Small study, directional, but consistent with everything else.
Presence on cited pages matters
Surfer analyzed 922 prompts across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity and found that the larger the share of cited pages that mention a brand, the more strongly AI recommends it (Spearman 0.41), with ChatGPT showing the strongest link. Blog posts were the content type most associated with recommendation strength (Surfer).
Reputation is summarized
OpenAI says ChatGPT's shopping review summaries are generated from reviews on public websites (OpenAI). Since May 2026, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode can also show quotes from forums, social media and Reddit (Engadget). What people say about you is literally part of the answer.
The 6 signals
1. Category association
Does the model already think of you when it thinks of your category? This comes from how often you appear alongside category terms in what the model learned from and what it sees in search: "best X" articles, community threads, comparisons and reviews.
How to strengthen it: consistent presence over time in the places your category is discussed. There is no shortcut, which is why starting early matters.
2. Third-party mentions
How often, and where, other people mention you. This is the strongest single factor in the Ahrefs data. Reddit stands out among sources: in early 2026 data covering about 350,000 social citations across five AI systems, Reddit took over half of social-platform citations (Wellows).
How to strengthen it: earn mentions in comparison articles and roundups, Reddit threads that rank and get cited, YouTube reviews, podcasts and industry newsletters. More in our ChatGPT recommendation playbook.
3. Retrievability
When AI searches, can it find and read your pages? Pages that rank for buyer questions get fetched and cited, and cited brands get clicked: Seer Interactive found brands cited in AI Overviews earned roughly double the organic click-through of brands that were not cited (Seer Interactive).
How to strengthen it: make sure search and AI crawlers are not blocked, keep important pages fast and indexable, and target the questions buyers actually ask with direct answers.
4. Clear brand description
If AI cannot summarize what you do in one sentence, it will not recommend you confidently, or it will describe you wrongly.
How to strengthen it: one clear sentence about what you are and who you are for, repeated consistently on your site, profiles, directories and review listings. Honest pricing, comparison and FAQ pages. Structured data where it applies.
5. Reputation and sentiment
AI does not just count mentions; it summarizes them. A brand mentioned often but mostly in complaint threads gets described accordingly.
How to strengthen it: a product people like, a steady flow of genuine reviews, fast public responses to complaints and an honest presence in community discussions.
6. Fit with the user's constraints
AI recommendations are personalized to the request: budget, team size, location, integrations, use case. OpenAI says ChatGPT weighs factors differently depending on the request, for example focusing on price when a budget is given (OpenAI).
How to strengthen it: make your constraints explicit. Who you are best for, who you are not for, price ranges, integrations and limits. Specific beats vague.
Each engine has its own taste
| Engine | Leans on | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Its own model knowledge plus web search; historically heavy on Reddit and Wikipedia, with big month-to-month swings | Be known in the category and present in widely cited discussions |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's index; YouTube, LinkedIn and Reddit prominent; quotes from forums since May 2026 | Classic SEO still helps, plus video and community presence |
| Perplexity | Live web search with visible citations; Reddit frequently its top source | Threads and pages that rank for the exact question |
| Gemini | Google's ecosystem | Similar to Google's AI features |

What does not work
- Hidden text or instructions aimed at AI. Systems are built to ignore or penalize manipulation, and it can damage trust in your site.
- Mass-produced AI content on your own site. More pages had one of the weakest correlations in the Ahrefs data (0.17).
- Fake reviews and sockpuppet accounts. Against platform rules and, in the US, against the FTC's rule on fake reviews. When exposed, they become the very discussions AI summarizes.
- Buying links alone. Backlinks trail mentions by a wide margin.
A simple AI visibility scorecard
Your options
- Do it yourself. Run a monthly prompt set in a spreadsheet, fix your owned signals and work on mentions. Free, but slow and manual.
- AI visibility tracking tools. Automate the monitoring across engines. They measure the problem; they do not create mentions.
- PR and content partnerships. Strong for third-party mentions in articles and roundups.
- Community presence. Reddit and YouTube for discussions and reviews, the sources AI leans on most.
How ReddBounty helps
ReddBounty focuses on the earned signals that matter most and are hardest to build:
- Measure where you stand. The free AI visibility checker runs buyer-style prompts in AI assistants and shows whether you are mentioned, how you are described and which competitors and sources appear.
- Find the discussions that feed AI. Monitoring tracks your brand, competitors and category on Reddit, including threads that rank on Google.
- Earn real mentions. Campaigns connect you with real Creators with established Reddit accounts who mention your brand in relevant threads, in their own words, under our disclosure policy. Scout AI checks every Task against the subreddit's rules first.
- Pay only for what is live. Campaign balance is only used when a post is live and approved, with proof. If a post is removed early, the Task is relisted or refunded.
Frequently asked questions
How do AI assistants decide which brands to recommend?
They combine what the model already knows about a category with what it retrieves when it searches. Brands that are widely discussed, mentioned on trusted pages, clearly described, well reviewed and a good fit for the user's constraints are the ones most likely to be recommended.
Do backlinks matter for AI visibility?
They matter less than you might expect. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, backlinks correlated with AI Overview brand visibility at 0.218, while branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 and branded anchor text at 0.527.
Can I optimize my website to get recommended by AI?
Partly. A clear, consistent, crawlable website with direct answers, honest comparisons and structured data helps AI describe you correctly and cite you. But most of the strongest signals are off-site: mentions, reviews and discussions about you.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?
Usually because your competitor is mentioned more often in the places the model learned from and the pages it retrieves: comparison articles, Reddit threads, review sites and YouTube. Check which sources it cites for your category and work on being present there.
Does llms.txt help AI recommend my brand?
There is no public evidence that major AI assistants use llms.txt as a ranking signal for recommendations. It can help some tools read your site, and it is cheap to add, but it is not a substitute for being mentioned and reviewed elsewhere.
How do I measure AI brand visibility?
Track a fixed set of buyer prompts across several AI assistants every month. Record whether you are mentioned, your position, how you are described, which competitors appear and which sources are cited. Add branded search volume and AI referral traffic to the picture.

How to Get Your Products Recommended in ChatGPT Shopping (2026 Guide)
ChatGPT shows products in carousels and in buyer's guides from its shopping research feature. OpenAI says product results are selected independently, are not ads and are ranked on relevance to the request using structured product data like price and description, reviews from public websites, and merchant factors like availability, price and quality. Shopify stores are included through Shopify Catalog; other merchants can apply for a direct product feed. To get recommended, make your product data complete and accurate, earn real reviews and discussion on the sites ChatGPT reads, and test buyer prompts monthly.
Reddit vs Quora vs YouTube for AI Citations: Where Should Your Brand Show Up in 2026?
Across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Reddit earns the largest share of social-platform citations, around half in early 2026 data, with YouTube second and growing fastest, and Quora declining. Reddit also appears in about 84% of Google's Discussions and forums results versus 32% for Quora. Reddit is the best first investment for most brands, YouTube is the strongest second channel, especially for Google's AI features, and Quora is now a low-priority extra.
Reddit Answers Explained: How Reddit's AI Search Works and How Brands Show Up in It (2026)
Reddit Answers is Reddit's AI-powered search. You ask a question in plain language and it returns a summary of what Redditors have said, with links to the source threads and follow-up questions. Launched in December 2024, it has been merged into Reddit's main search, which reached over 80 million weekly searchers in Q4 2025. For brands, it means the threads where people discuss your category now feed an AI answer engine inside Reddit itself, on top of Google and ChatGPT.
