Removed, Filtered or Shadowbanned? A Flowchart to Diagnose Any Missing Reddit Post (2026)

Jan Kobylarz, Founder, ReddBounty 9 min readLast updated:

The short answer

A missing Reddit post usually falls into one of four buckets: removed by a subreddit's moderators or their automation (AutoMod, Contributor Quality Score, Rules Hub), caught by Reddit's sitewide spam filters, restricted at the account level (shadowban or suspension), or simply buried. The fastest diagnosis is to check the post logged out, check your inbox and post insights, and test whether the problem happens in one subreddit or everywhere. Each bucket has a different fix, from a polite modmail to a formal appeal.

Key takeaways

  • Always check from a logged-out browser. A removed or filtered post usually still looks normal to you.
  • If the problem is in one subreddit, it is that community's rules or automation. If it is everywhere, it is your account, your link or Reddit's spam filters.
  • Filtered is not the same as removed: a filtered post waits in the mod queue and can still be approved.
  • Rules Hub adds three outcomes moderators can choose per rule: send to queue, filter or remove.
  • Never repost the same thing or use a second account to get around a removal. That turns a fixable problem into a ban.

The four buckets

Almost every "my post disappeared" story fits one of these:

  1. Community action. The subreddit's moderators removed it by hand, or their automation did: AutoModerator, a Contributor Quality Score filter or Rules Hub.
  2. Sitewide spam filtering. Reddit's own systems caught a pattern: a link posted in many places, a domain associated with spam, very fast posting.
  3. Account-level restriction. A shadowban (everything you post is hidden from others) or a suspension (you are told and blocked).
  4. Nothing is wrong. The post is live but got no traction, was buried by downvotes or is sitting in a queue waiting for review.

The diagnosis flowchart

Where did my Reddit post go? 1. Open the post logged out. Can others see it? YES It's live Just low traction NO 2. Open your profile logged out. Missing or "banned"? YES Account restriction Shadowban or suspension reddit.com/appeal PROFILE OK 3. Do posts in other communities show? Same link or text elsewhere? NO Sitewide filter Your link, domain or posting pattern YES, ONLY HERE 4. Community action. Check inbox, modmail, post insights and the rules. Removed by mods Removal reason, flair or mod comment. Fix: read rule, one polite modmail Auto-removed "Removed by Reddit's filters", AutoMod message. Fix: meet karma, age or format rules Filtered / queued Held for review, incl. Rules Hub "filter". Fix: wait, then one modmail Never repost the same thing or switch accounts while you diagnose.

The Rules Hub outcomes, explained

Reddit's newer, LLM-based moderation layer gives moderators three actions for each rule: "send to queue, filter, or remove" (Social Media Today).

  • Send to queue: your post usually stays up but is flagged for a moderator. It might be removed later.
  • Filter: your post is hidden until a moderator approves it.
  • Remove: your post is taken down automatically.

Because Rules Hub reads the intent of a rule, posts that dodge keyword filters, like a pitch phrased as a question, are more likely to trigger it than with AutoMod alone. More in Reddit Rules Hub explained.

The fix for each outcome

Removed by moderators

  1. Re-read the community's rules and the sidebar. Most removals point to a specific rule.
  2. Check your inbox, the post's comments and its flair for a removal reason.
  3. If it is unclear, send one polite modmail: "Hi, my post about X was removed. Could you tell me which rule it broke so I can fix it?"
  4. Fix it and repost only if the moderators say that is fine.

Auto-removed or filtered

  1. Look for a bot message explaining the rule (karma, account age, title format, link not allowed).
  2. If it is a karma or age threshold, build history first. See Reddit's new-account rules in 2026.
  3. If it is filtered, wait. Moderators review queues at different speeds. A single modmail after a day is fine.
  4. Do not delete and resubmit. Repeated attempts look like spam and can make filters stricter for your account.

Sitewide spam filter

  1. Test the same text without your link in a community where you are active. If it shows, the link or domain is the problem.
  2. Stop posting that link for a while. Avoid URL shorteners.
  3. Space out activity. Posting the same link in many communities in a short time is a classic spam signal (Postiz).
  4. Build normal participation: comments, varied communities, no links for a while.

Subreddit ban

  1. Read the ban message; it often names the rule.
  2. Reply once through modmail, politely. Ask whether there is a path back.
  3. Never post in that community from another account. Ban evasion is a sitewide violation.

Shadowban or suspension

  1. Confirm with the logged-out profile test.
  2. Appeal through Reddit's official form at reddit.com/appeal. Be factual and brief.
  3. Stop activity on the account while you wait, and do not create a new account to get around it.

How to prevent removals in the first place

Six habits that prevent most removals 1 Read rules and pinned posts 2 Have real history before posting 3 Lead with value, not the product 4 Disclose any affiliation 5 Never repeat a link across subs 6 Log removals and learn from them
Figure 2. Prevention is cheaper than appeals.

Keep a removal log. For brands and anyone posting regularly, a simple spreadsheet with date, subreddit, post type, outcome and reason turns every removal into a lesson. After a month you will know exactly which communities, formats and phrasings work.

What this means for brands

For a brand, a removal is not just a lost post. It can also mean a moderator now associates your brand with spam, and a call-out thread can rank on Google. So:

  • Test new communities with low-risk, genuinely helpful comments before any mention.
  • Treat moderators as partners. Ask before posting anything promotional.
  • Track removal rates per community and stop posting where the rate is high.
  • Never let anyone working for you use throwaway accounts.

Your options

  • DIY with a removal log. Free and effective if someone owns it.
  • Monitoring tools. Some track whether your posts and mentions stay live over time.
  • Agencies. Experience helps, but ask how they handle removals and what accounts they use.
  • ReddBounty. Removal risk checked before posting, and you only pay for posts that are live.

How ReddBounty reduces removals

We built ReddBounty around avoiding exactly the problems in this flowchart:

  • Rules checked before anything goes live. Scout AI reads each subreddit's rules and known posting requirements, then gives every Task a quality score and a removal-risk score. High-risk drafts are rewritten or dropped.
  • Real accounts with real history. Creators post from their own established accounts, in their own words, under our disclosure policy, which avoids most new-account filters.
  • Learning from every removal. When something is removed, we record the cause per subreddit, so future Tasks in that community avoid the same mistake.
  • Pay only for what is live. Your Campaign balance is only used when a post is live and approved, with a live link and screenshot as proof. If a post is removed early, the Task is relisted or refunded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Reddit post was removed?

Open the post in a private or logged-out browser window. If it shows as removed, is missing from the subreddit's 'new' feed or the page is unavailable, other people cannot see it. Then check your inbox for a message from the moderators or AutoModerator and look at the post's insights for a removal note.

What does 'removed by Reddit's filters' mean?

It means an automatic filter took the post down rather than a moderator by hand. It is usually a subreddit's AutoMod rules, such as minimum karma or account age, a Contributor Quality Score filter or Reddit's spam filtering. If you think it was a mistake, send the community one polite modmail.

What is the difference between removed and filtered?

Removed means the post was taken down. Filtered means it was held for moderator review and is invisible until a moderator approves it. Filtered posts can still go live, so wait and, if needed, send one polite modmail rather than reposting.

Am I shadowbanned or just filtered?

Test whether the problem happens everywhere. Open your profile logged out: if it shows that the account does not exist or is unavailable, and none of your posts or comments are visible in any community, it is likely an account-level restriction. If posts disappear in one community but work elsewhere, it is that community's filters.

How do I appeal a Reddit removal or ban?

For a removal or ban in one subreddit, message that subreddit's moderators through modmail, politely and once. For account suspensions and sitewide actions, use Reddit's official appeal form at reddit.com/appeal. Never create a new account to get around a ban.

Can Rules Hub remove my post by mistake?

Yes, like any automated system it can make mistakes. Moderators choose whether a rule sends content to the queue, filters it or removes it, and they can review the logs. If you believe a removal was wrong, modmail is the right channel.

Reddit Marketing for Agencies: How to Add Reddit and AI Visibility to Your Services in 2026

Clients are asking agencies for Reddit because it is one of the most-cited sources in AI answers and ranks on Google for buying searches. A sound agency offer has five layers: an audit of Reddit and AI visibility, ongoing monitoring, disclosed participation in relevant threads, amplification through AMAs and Reddit Ads, and monthly reporting. Typical B2B retainers run about $3,000 to $12,500 a month. The biggest risk is compliance: under the FTC's Endorsement Guides, agencies can be liable for facilitating misleading endorsements, so disclosure and real accounts are non-negotiable.

Reddit Marketing for Local Businesses: How to Get Recommended in Your City's Subreddit (2026)

When locals need a dentist, a mechanic or a good brunch spot, many ask their city's subreddit, and those threads often rank on Google for 'best X in [city]' and get quoted in AI answers. Most city subreddits ban self-promotion outside designated threads, so local businesses win on Reddit by being genuinely helpful locals, responding well when mentioned, using the community's promo threads, encouraging real customers to share honest experiences, and using Reddit Ads' location targeting for openings and events.

Reddit Marketing for Ecommerce and DTC Brands: The 2026 Playbook

Shoppers use Reddit as their reality check. In Reddit-commissioned research from 2026, about half of US shoppers said they verify AI product recommendations on Reddit, and more than half check Reddit before buying. For ecommerce and DTC brands, that means the winning Reddit strategy is organic first: listen, answer product questions honestly, handle complaints in public, help real customers share real experiences and earn mentions in the threads that rank. Then use Reddit's Shopify integration and product ads to retarget the people those threads reach.
