Why Did My Website Traffic Drop in 2026? Impressions Up, Clicks Down, Explained
The short answer
If your Google impressions are flat or rising while clicks fall, you are most likely not penalized. In 2026 most organic traffic loss is structural: AI Overviews and AI Mode answer the question on Google, and SparkToro estimates 68% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026. First rule out tracking bugs, algorithm updates and technical issues. Then shift effort to the queries that still click, get cited inside AI answers, and show up on the sources AI and Google lean on, especially Reddit.
Key takeaways
- Impressions up, clicks down usually means Google and AI answers are satisfying the search before anyone clicks, not that your site was penalized.
- Pew Research found people clicked a traditional result on 8% of Google visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, and clicked a link inside the summary only 1% of the time.
- Being cited inside an AI Overview helps: Seer Interactive measured roughly double the organic CTR for cited brands versus brands that were not cited.
- Before blaming AI, check the boring causes: the August 13, 2026 Search Console logging bug, the March and May 2026 core updates, spam updates, tracking and technical problems.
- The fix is not more blog posts. It is visibility where answers are formed: AI citations, Reddit threads that rank, comparison pages and tools people still click.
The pattern: impressions up, clicks down
You open Google Search Console and see something that makes no sense. Impressions are flat or up. Average position is fine. Clicks are down 20%, 30%, sometimes more.
SEOs call this the great decoupling, or the "crocodile mouth" because the two lines open like jaws (NoGood). It means your pages are still being found. They are just not being visited.
Why it is happening
1. AI Overviews answer the question on Google
When an AI Overview appears, fewer people scroll and click. Pew Research tracked 68,879 real Google searches by 900 US adults: people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary only 1% of the time (Pew Research Center).
Ahrefs' February 2026 update, based on 300,000 keywords, found a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page on keywords with an AI Overview. Its April 2025 version had measured 34.5%, so the effect grew (Ahrefs).
2. AI Mode goes even further
AI Mode replaces the list of links with a full conversational answer. In a preregistered field experiment with 1,100 US Chrome users, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Northeastern University found AI Mode cut external click-through by 18.8 percentage points, with clicks to news sites, Reddit and Wikipedia all falling (TechWyse).
3. Zero-click is now the default
SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb panel data estimated that 68% of US Google searches ended without a click in January to April 2026, up from about 60% in 2024 (TechWyse). Fewer than one in three searches now sends anyone anywhere.
4. Impressions count more places
Your page can earn an impression from a regular result and from an AI feature. Google started rolling out a dedicated Generative AI features report in Search Console in June 2026 covering AI Overviews and AI Mode. It shows impressions, but no clicks (TripleDart). Being shown in an AI answer and being visited are now two different numbers.
Who gets hit hardest (and who doesn't)
The losses are not spread evenly:
- Hit hardest: informational content. "What is", "how to", definitions, simple how-tos and health or finance explainers. The AI answer covers most of what the searcher needs.
- Hit less: commercial and decision queries. People comparing products, checking prices, reading reviews or looking for a specific tool still click, because they want details, proof and other people's experience.
- Mixed: local searches. AI features appear on many local queries, but people still need a map, a phone number or a booking page.
Seer Interactive also saw something hopeful: after falling through 2025, organic CTR on queries with an AI Overview rebounded from about 1.3% in December 2025 to about 2.4% in February 2026, though still well below results without one (Seer Interactive). The picture is moving, which is another reason to diagnose your own data rather than assume.
First, rule out the boring causes
Not every drop is AI. Before you rewrite your strategy, work through this list:
- Is it a reporting bug? A Search Console logging error reduced reported impressions and clicks from August 13, 2026, mainly in the Generative AI and Discover reports. Google confirmed it was a logging issue and fixed it later that month (Search Engine Roundtable). Check Google's data anomalies page whenever numbers move suddenly across many sites.
- Does it line up with an update? 2026 so far has included the March core update (March 27 to April 8), the May core update (May 21 to June 2) and several spam updates, including one that started September 24 (Search Engine Roundtable). If specific pages lost rankings around those dates, that is an update problem, not a zero-click problem.
- Is it technical? Look for noindex tags, robots.txt changes, broken canonicals, a site migration, slow pages or Core Web Vitals regressions, and pages dropping out of the index.
- Is it tracking? Consent banners, a new analytics setup or a tag that stopped firing can make traffic "drop" in analytics while Search Console clicks are fine. Compare the two.
- Is it seasonal or demand-driven? Check Google Trends for your main topics. Sometimes fewer people are simply searching.
How to confirm it's AI and zero-click
In Search Console:
- Open Performance, compare the last 3 months with the same period last year, and switch on clicks, impressions, CTR and position.
- Go to Queries. Sort by click difference. Look for queries where position held and impressions held, but CTR collapsed. That is the zero-click signature.
- Search a handful of those queries yourself (logged out, in a private window). Is there an AI Overview? Does AI Mode show up? Are Reddit threads, YouTube videos or "People also ask" boxes above you?
- Open the Generative AI features report (if you have it) and see which pages are being shown in AI answers.
- Tag each losing page as informational, commercial or local. You will usually find that most of the loss is informational.
What to do about it: your options
There is no single fix, and anyone promising to "get your traffic back" to 2023 levels is selling something. Here are the realistic moves, roughly in order of impact.
Option 1: Protect the pages that still get clicks
Comparison pages ("X vs Y"), alternatives pages, pricing, calculators, templates, free tools and local landing pages still earn clicks because the AI answer cannot replace them. Give these pages your best work: original screenshots, real numbers, clear tables and an honest "who this is for".
Option 2: Make your pages easy for AI to quote
AI systems pull short, specific, well-sourced passages. Put a direct 2-3 sentence answer under each main heading, use clear H2 questions that match how people ask, add FAQ sections, cite sources and keep pages updated. Being cited matters: Seer measured roughly double the click-through for cited brands compared with brands left out of the AI Overview. Our guides to generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization cover the details.
Option 3: Show up where answers are sourced
AI assistants do not just read your website. They read what other people say about you. Reddit was the most-cited domain across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode in May 2026, according to Semrush data reported by The Verge (LinkDoctor), and Reddit threads often rank on page one for "best X" searches. Helpful mentions in those threads, YouTube reviews and review sites can reach buyers even when nobody clicks your own page. See why Reddit ranks on Google and how to get cited in AI answers.
Option 4: Measure what matters now
Sessions alone undercount your reach. Add these to your monthly report:
- Branded search volume (are more people searching your name?)
- AI visibility: are you mentioned when people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity about your category?
- AI referral traffic in analytics (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com)
- Mentions in Reddit threads and other communities
- Conversions, not just visits
Option 5: Build things AI can't summarize
A free tool, an original dataset, a template library or an active community cannot be fully replaced by a paragraph. These assets earn links, get discussed on Reddit and give AI systems something specific to cite.
Option 6: Paid search and ads
Ads still sit at the top of the page, but they are not immune: Seer measured lower paid CTR when an AI Overview appears too. Ads are useful for short bursts, not as a replacement for organic visibility. If you are weighing ads on Reddit specifically, read Reddit Ads vs organic Reddit posts.
How ReddBounty helps
ReddBounty focuses on the part of this problem most SEO tools ignore: getting your brand mentioned in the places AI answers and Google pull from.
- See where you stand. Our free AI visibility checker asks AI assistants the questions your buyers ask and shows whether you are mentioned, how you are described and which competitors and sources show up instead.
- Find the threads that matter. We surface Reddit threads in your category, including ones already ranking on Google, so you know where a mention would be seen by buyers and by AI.
- Get real mentions that stay up. With a Campaign, real Creators post helpful, rule-following replies about your brand from their own accounts, under our disclosure policy. Scout AI checks every Task against the subreddit's rules before it goes live.
- Pay only for what is live. Your Campaign balance is only used when a post is live and approved, with a link and screenshot as proof. If a post is removed early, the Task is relisted or refunded.
- Keep watch. Monitoring and email alerts tell you when your brand, your competitors or your category come up, so you can join the conversation while it matters.
The bottom line
A traffic drop in 2026 is usually not a sign you did something wrong. It is a sign that search changed. Diagnose carefully, protect the pages people still click, make your content easy to quote, and invest in being mentioned where AI and Google look for real opinions. Visibility is the new traffic.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my impressions going up but clicks going down?
Your pages are still being shown, but more searchers get their answer from AI Overviews, AI Mode or other features on the results page and never click. Google counts an impression when your page appears, including in AI features, so impressions can hold or rise while clicks fall. This pattern is often called the great decoupling.
Did Google penalize my site?
Probably not, if rankings are stable and the drop is spread across many informational pages. A penalty or update hit usually shows as falling rankings on specific pages around a known update date. Check Search Console for manual actions and compare your drop with the March 27 and May 21, 2026 core update dates and the 2026 spam updates.
How much traffic do AI Overviews take?
It depends on the query. Pew Research found clicks on traditional results fell from 15% to 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared. Ahrefs reported a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page on keywords with AI Overviews in its February 2026 update. Informational queries are hit hardest; commercial and local intent queries lose less.
How do I see AI Overview and AI Mode data in Search Console?
Google began rolling out a Generative AI features report in Search Console in June 2026. It shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date, but not clicks, so pair it with your regular Performance report to see which pages are shown but not clicked.
How do I recover organic traffic in 2026?
Diagnose first, then rebalance. Protect pages that still earn clicks (comparisons, pricing, tools, local pages), restructure key pages so AI systems can quote them, earn citations on sources AI uses such as Reddit, YouTube and review sites, and track AI visibility and branded search, not only sessions.
Is Reddit really part of the answer?
Reddit is one of the sources AI systems and Google lean on most. Semrush data reported by The Verge found Reddit was the most-cited domain across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode in May 2026. Helpful mentions in the right threads can reach buyers even when your own page is not clicked.

Why Reddit Ranks on Google - and How to Use It for SEO
Reddit SEO is the practice of understanding how public Reddit discussions appear in search results and contributing useful information where allowed. A thread can rank or be cited, but neither outcome is guaranteed by publishing a comment. This guide explains research, community permission and evidence-based measurement.
Reddit Marketing for Agencies: How to Add Reddit and AI Visibility to Your Services in 2026
Clients are asking agencies for Reddit because it is one of the most-cited sources in AI answers and ranks on Google for buying searches. A sound agency offer has five layers: an audit of Reddit and AI visibility, ongoing monitoring, disclosed participation in relevant threads, amplification through AMAs and Reddit Ads, and monthly reporting. Typical B2B retainers run about $3,000 to $12,500 a month. The biggest risk is compliance: under the FTC's Endorsement Guides, agencies can be liable for facilitating misleading endorsements, so disclosure and real accounts are non-negotiable.
